Sandro Mosele is one of Victoria's most accomplished vignerons, his celebrated editions of Kooyong and Port Phillip estates are amongst the most cherished renderings of Burgundy styled Pinot Noir in the nation. Mosele has applied his art to a precious parcel of fruit, picked off a single, modest block of vine, grown to the fully fertile soils of a lamb and beef stud, on the brisk, maritime blown coastals of Gippsland South. This is not Pinot for profit, Walkerville represents an aesthetic appreciation of fruit from the farmer, invigorated by the blessings of providence and consecrations of local livestock. Forest Hill can lay claim to producing some of Western Australia's finest Shiraz grapes. The winemaking facility itself is closely managed to vinify the exceptional fruit into a solidly structured, vigorous wine. Grapes are destemmed and crushed into open fermenters for a cold soak, inoculation and two or three pumpovers daily throughout the ferments. Vinifications are capped at 25°C to prevent over extraction of tannins locked in the skins. A short spell of maceration is followed by transfer to barrel for malolactic where the wine integrates and softens. Matured sixteen months in a combination of new and seasoned, Francois Freres and Sirugue French oak barriques.
Deep red with purple hue. Lifted aromas of blue berries and plum, hints of subtle spice and earthy notes. Underlying savoury oak characters add complexity and evolve in the glass. Medium bodied palate with plum and blackberry flavours following through with subtle hints of earthiness and white pepper spice. Well integrated cedary oak flavours featuring fine chewy tannins and a firm rich mouth feel.
