The Heathcote Wineworks were one of the first commercial wineries in central Victoria. Thomas Craven was a purveyor of spirits and wine, he traded in gold, providing a lifeline to local prospectors. There were two scrub covered parcels of land, just outside Pokolbin village along McDonalds Road, that local council had long set aside for use as cricket ground and cemetery.
