Shiraz Barossa South Australia
Oscar Semmler added to the family farm in the 1930s, planting new rootstock to make port wine. His son returned from a tour of duty with the RAAF in the 1970s and re-established the site to yield fruit for good red table wines, it remains the heart of Dutschke vineyards. The most structured and mouthfilling parcels of Shiraz grown to the superlative St Jakobi Block are set aside each year for Oscar Semmler. Oscar is the reserve label for Dutschke, a flagship Barossa Shiraz representing the best of vintage from within the elite appellation of Lyndoch.
From vines planted by Ken Semmler, across the road from where Oscar Semmler and his brothers grew up at Lyndoch in the Barossa, alongside the St. Jakobi Lutheran church and school. Oscar is the reserve label for Dutschke, representing the best of the vintage from the highly precious 1975 block of Shiraz. Grapes are harvested and crushed, the must is inoculated and vinified over the course of a fortnight in fermenters under a shed veranda, before being transferred to a selection of seasoned and new French oak hogsheads for completion of ferments. Oscar is then racked and returned to barrel where it remains for twenty one months maturation. Alcohol 14.5%
Dark, deep red colour. Ripe bouquets, dense and concentrated, appetizing aromas. A full bodied, ripe and generously fruit filled palate of black berries and plum. Spicy French oak characters and fine grain grape tannins compliment a round sweet fruit palate concentration. The finish is long, with firm tannins and clean acidity. It's a wine that's irresistible today and will continue to soften whilst gaining complexity.
