Shiraz Barossa South Australia
A hundred and seventy years after the establishment of Australia's most internationally renowned luxury brand, Penfolds have released an exceptional vintage, single vineyard Shiraz, from the highly distinguished Block 3C at Kalimna. This ancient Barossa site is often called upon to provide the backbone of fruit for the mighty Grange. The peerless quality of harvest, to be picked off Block 3C at the end of growing season 2010, merited a pure, single Bin bottling, in timely commemoration of the most eminent marque in new world wine.
An exclusive edition of the finest Penfold Shiraz, picked off a wonderful old site, originally sowed to vines in 1888. Block 3C of the stately Kalimna property has been the source of Penfolds most memorable and long lived vintages. Kalimna literally means pleasant view, its gently undulating slopes are envigorated by cool sea breezes from the Gulf St Vincent. All grapes destined for Bin 170 are picked and sorted by hand, parcels are treated to a term of cold soak maceration for optimal extractions of colour and tannin, followed by a traditional vinification in select fermenters. Upon completion, batches are filled to a high proportion of new French oak hogsheads for sixteen months maturation. Alcohol 14.5%
