Tempranillo Barossa South Australia
Tscharke are a highly traditional, family hands on operation who have tilled their soils and husbanded vines for generations. A resurgence of interest for the arcane styles of the old world, inspired plantings of the more abstruse varietal grapes in the 1980s and 1990s. Crafted from parcels of Tempranillo clones D8V12 and Requiena, picked off two choice sites at Stonewell and Gnadenfrei in the western precincts of Barossa Valley, the Only Son offers a deliciously complex fruit filled wine with a measure of suave, food friendly savouryness.
Harvests from two distinct terroirs are assembled into a wine of elegant seamlessness and astonishing balance. Determining optimal time of picking is essential, only time spent amongst the vines can capture the balance between complete tannin ripeness and juicy acidity. Grapes are all harvested by hand and destemmed, crushed through a chiller and treated to three days of cold soak before inoculation to choice yeasts. Following a short term of vinification on skins at warmer temperatures, batches are pressed off for completion of ferments and racked off gross lees into a selection of seasoned French oak barriques for fifteen months maturation.
Brick red in colour. Aromas of sarsaparilla and dark cherry, olives, bay leaf and the savouryness of Mediterranean herbs. A broad, medium bodied palate, brimming with dark cherry flavours, cocoa oak, appetizing tomato vine and truffle characters, persistent on a length of dusty drying tannins. Match with olive oil recipes, funghi and cacciatore.
