Montepulciano Barossa South Australia
Montepulciano hails from Abruzzo on the Adriatic, it makes an immensely popular style, of food friendly savouryness and soft, light tannins. Tscharke source their Montepulciano from the first such site ever established in Australia. Montepulciano likes to vintage just a little later in the year, the longer growing season yields better balance and riper tannins in the fruit. An astonishingly good drink alongside all fine fare, its engagingly complex nose and judiciously drying palate conjures up recipes of bay leaf and game, fenneled sausages and braised, cured pork.
Tscharke process their Montepulciano with a view to preserving the varietal's uniqueness, vibrancy and primary fruit freshness. Grapes are picked by a hand off a prestigious site in the eminent Barossa hamlet of Stonewell, vines are all trained onto a single cordon wire, verticle shoot positioned for optimal exposure to the sun. Bunches are destemmed into open top fermenters, musts are inoculated and vinified at 22ºC to 25ºC, ferments are pumped over twice daily until complete sugar dryness. Upon completion, batches are held on skins for a month of maceration, followed by pressing and racking to a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels for a year's maturation.
