Three British Army officers, in their capacity as agents of the East India Company, established one of Western Australia's first agricultural enterprises in 1836. Named after Captain Richmond Houghton, it was not until Thomas Yule's stewardship that vines were planted and the first vintage of Houghton wine flowed in 1859. Halls Gap Vineyard was planted 1969, along the steep eastern slopes and parched rocky crags of Grampians Ranges, at the very beginning of a renaissance in Victorian viticulture. Since early establishment in the 1860s by the noble Houses of Seppelt and Bests, the region had earned the most elite peerage, a provenance of extraordinary red wines, bursting with bramble opulence and lined with limousin tannins. Assembled from wines across several vintages, a selection of well aged stocks matured in seasoned casks, topped up and rotated according to the ancient Solera system. Fermented in own bottle and tiraged for optimal effervescence before release, an immensely satisfying style of redolent red sparkling, decidedly rich and complex, proffering cassis, blackberry and violet fruits. Balnave practice the high art of Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, its ribald pink mousse, blooming with moreish wine jube characters within a cosset of smooth milk chocolate tannins.
