The very first blocks of vine planted at Scotchmans Hill, are now in their fourth decade. Set aside for bottling as a range of limited release, single vineyard wines, they represent the first growth of viticulture from the fertile crescent of Port Phillip's western shore. Crafted to traditional old world techniques, very similar to the great Crus of la Bourgogne, they afford the true enthusiast an opportunity to engage with the decadent delights of the greater Geelong, as sampled alongside Gruyere, game and the finest gourmandise... There are fewer than twenty hectares of Stefano Lubiana vines, overlooking the spectacular tidal estuary of Derwent River. Chosen for its felicitious winegrowing aspects, it is a place of scrupulously clean soils, free of any pesticides or manufactured treatments. Insects are welcome here, they are mother nature's endorsement of a holistically biodynamic viticulture. Lubiana is a fifth generation winemaker, one of the apple isle's leading vignerons, he works to an arcane system of seasonal chronometers, governed by cosmic rhythms, the turning of leaves and angle of the moon. His wines are given full indulgence to make themselves. Ferments lie undisturbed and movements to barrel are led by gravity. The Balvenie is unlike all other Single Malt Scotch Whiskies, thanks to a unique combination of human craft and natural alchemy, neither of which have changed in over a century. Nowhere else will you find a Distillery that still grows its own barley, still turns by shovel its own traditional floor maltings, still employs a team of coopers to tend all the casks and a coppersmith to maintain the stills.
Deep toasty amber hues. A rich combination of elegant oak and subtle spice. Smooth and complex, suggestive of many years careful ageing, hints of dried fruit and spice overlaid with a gentle nuttiness, oak flavours and delicate spice notes. A long and sherried finish.
