Josef Chromy OAM escaped from war torn Czechoslovakia as a penniless 19 year old in 1950, he fled across minefields, evading soldiers and killer dogs, ultimately finding a new home in the lucky country. Chromy has been a long standing principal in the Tasmanian food and wine industry, he established Tasmania's leading brands, including Bay of Fires, Jansz, Heemskerk and Tamar Ridge. At 76 years young, he launched his namesake label, planting one of the apple isle's most stately vineyards and gazetting Tasmania's most compellingly stylish range of wines. Boutique winemaking affords great advantages, every vine can be uniquely husbanded, quality control is maximised, each barrel can be individually sampled and assembled into the perfect cuvee. Tucked away off the beaten track along Godings Road, a rustic barn offers fantastic vistas of the rolling Moorooduc countryside. The misty mornings and generous afternoon sunlight create a mesoclime which encourages the vines to yield small bunches of intensely flavoured Shiraz. The best bunches are identified, gently picked and gingerly sorted, destemmed and open fermented, hand plunged and filled to a mix of French oak barriques for malolactic and ten months élevage, bottled unfined for optimal sauvage appeal.
