Established 1973, Woodlands of Wilyabrup were one of the first vineyards in Margaret River, planted with a view to emulating the great growths of Bordeaux. Recipients of the highly prestigious Jack Mann Memorial Medal and Wine Industry Lifetime Achievement Award for their tremendous vintages of all things Cabernet. Assembling the rich Medoc style blends are what Woodlands do best. Painstakingly crafted by hand, to challenge the primacy of the illustrious Chateaux de la rive gauche, very few vineyards yield the quality of fruit that merits vintaging into a statuesque wine dominated by the prettily fragrant Cabernet Franc. Woodlands were established from the ground up with a view to achieving limited harvests of the abstruse Bordeaux varietals, only a few hundred cases of good red wine per vintage. Two precious vineyards, located within the elite terroirs of Margaret River's Wilyabrup Valley, are dry grown and farmed through holistic regimens of old world viticulture. Leo Buring graduated as Dux of Oenology at Roseworthy Agricultural College in 1896. He gained practical experience in Europe before settling back at Minchinbury in 1902. Four years later, his wines earned six gold medals at The Brewers and Wine Exhibition in London. Over the years, Leo Buring established an international reputation as Australia's foremost maker of Riesling. The combination of climate, soil, aspect and location all add up to create discernibly different characters in Rieslings from each region. The favourable climes and cool nights up to harvest allow complex flavours to develop. Leo Buring is bottled immediately after vinification to capture and preserve pristine freshness.
Pale straw with subtle green hues. The precision and minerality of quartz and slate, a nose of varietal purity, linear definition and subtley soft, line and length. Heady jasmine florals mix with spicy tones of freshly ground cinnamon. Perfumed and complex. The juice of freshly picked new season limes combines with a slatey, minerality which belies the powerful strength of line and definition. Crystalline clarity and structural purity persist to leave the palate invigorated and cleansed.
