Hurtle Walker first picked grapes as a ten year old on the celebrious Magill property in 1900. Apprenticed to the legenderies Monsieur Duray and Leon Mazure, Walker was placed in charge of sparkling wine production for the historic Auldana Cellars at the ripe old age of 21. He saw service as a soldier in World War I and made great wine until 1975. Samuel Smith migrated from Dorset England to Angaston in the colony of South Australia circa 1847, he took up work as a gardener with George Fife Angas, the virtual founder of the colony. In 1849, Smith bought thirty acres and planted vines by moonlight, the first ever vintages of Yalumba. One of his most enduring legacies were some unique clones of Shiraz, which were ultimately sown to the illustrious Mount Edelstone vineyard in 1912. Harvests are collated from fine vineyards across the premiere viticultural precincts of Veneto. Grapes are crushed and treated to a term of cold settling for clarification, followed by inoculation to choice yeasts and controlled ferments at 16°C to 18°C. Upon completion, batches are assembled into the finished wine and bottled for a term of age before release.
Straw yellow hues. Floral bouquets, acacia blossom, mineral notes, slateyness and meal, persimmons and pear. An intense, exquisitely balanced palate, filled with the fruits of the orchard, apples, nashi and pear. Wonderfuly textural and pleasingly dry, its parched citrus intensity makes a wonderful match with white meats, egg recipes or terrines.
