Samuel Smith migrated from Dorset England to Angaston in the colony of South Australia circa 1847, he took up work as a gardener with George Fife Angas, the virtual founder of the colony. In 1849, Smith bought thirty acres and planted vines by moonlight, the first ever vintages of Yalumba. One of his most enduring legacies were some unique clones of Shiraz, which were ultimately sown to the illustrious Mount Edelstone vineyard in 1912. Angas's great grandchild Ron Angas acquired cuttings from the Edelstone site and migrated the precious plantings to his pastures at Hutton Vale. The land remains in family hands, a graze for flocks of some highly fortunate lamb. In between the paddocks, blocks of Sam Smith's experimental vines yield a harvest of the most spectacular Shiraz to be found in all Eden Valley... The return of rootstock to garden of eden»

Vega Sicilia Unico Cosecha 2005 CONFIRM 2005 VINTAGE

Vega Sicilia Unico Cosecha 2005 - Buy
Tempranillo Cabernet Sauvignon Ribera Del Duero Spain
The estate flagship, Unico Cosecha shares provenance with the world's great wines. Vinified from old vines Tempranilo and Cabernet Sauvignon, Unico Cosecha retains remarkable fresh fruit characters well into decades of ageing due to it's refined acidity and solid alcohol content. A national treaure that commands and receives respect at it's very mention, Unico Cosecha is treated to an extended ageing in a selection of estate coopered casks and barriques. Renowned for longevity, complexity, intensity and length, one of the world's great first growths.
The Ribera del Duero area enjoys a continental climate with an Atlantic influence. Rainfall is low, with annual averages below 500 mm, concentrated especially in spring and autumn. Sunshine is abundant, as the River Duero region favours the morning mists and fogs that provide an additional source of humidity. There are 250 hectares of vineyard at Vega Sicilia, mostly Tempranillo de la Ribera, with further plantings of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec. Vintage 1995 was vinified mostly from Tempranillo with a seventh of Cabernet Sauvignon, matured up to ten years in a combination of seasoned and new, oak casks and larger capacity wooden vats.
Dark opaque cherry colour. Deeply aromatic, penetrating fragrances of dark, elegant berries with generous hints of vanilla and tobacco oak. Massive concentration of fruit on the palate, sweetly oaked with a complexity of grain, leather and spice. Lengthy, drying tannins in support of layers of fruit, a wine of immeasurable length before a lingering, fruit filled finish.
