Dr Frederick Kiel would take the trek by paddle steamer from Melbourne every summer during the late 1800s to spend his summers at Sorrento. His children established a grazing station nearby, on a property acquired from the Baillieu family along Portsea Ocean Beach, ultimately planted to vineyards in 2000. These are the most extreme western longitudes of Mornington, the undulating paddocks and sweeping views of tempestuous Bass Strait are a magical place for growing Burgundesque styles of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, well protected north facing parcels of propitious free draining limestone and calcareous sands. The windswept maritime vineyards of little Portsea Estate yield the quality of Mornington that have to be experienced... Mornington's westernmost vineyards»
The sensational vintages of St John's Road were generations in the making, the fruit of grand old vineyards and the progeny of families which have tilled Barossa soil since early settlement. The landed gentry along St John's Road represent a heritage of the most distinguished names in Australian viticulture, Lehmann and Lienert, Zander, Kalleske and Schutz. With each vintage, they earmark small parcels of the most exceptional Barossa fruit, to be treated to a course of traditional open ferments and term of age in the finest French oak. Bearing such pious Lutheran monikers as Prayer Garden and Resurrection Vineyard, these sacred sites are planted to some of the oldest clones in the world. Vega Sicilia Valbuena 2006 CONFIRM 2006 VINTAGE

Vega Sicilia Valbuena 2006 - Buy
Tempranillo Merlot Malbec Ribera Del Duero Spain
Bodegas Vega Sicilia came into prominence after significant prize wins at the 1929 Barcelona World Fair. Today, the wines of Vega Sicilia are feted by the international industry press for their complexity, intensity and longevity, amongst the finest in the world.
Vega Sicilia continue to deliver wines that are concentrated and extravagantly matured, elegant and long lived . All vines are dry grown and hand pruned, yielding less than two kilos each. Grapes are never picked unless they have achieved high levels of sugar concentration. The optimum ripeness of fruit captured during harvest and high alcohol content facilitates the extraction of colour and tannins. A cepage of varying proportions, according to vintage, Tempranillo and Malbec, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, Vega Sicilia Valbuena is treated to maturation in a selection of new and seasoned, French and American oak casks and larger format oak vats for up to three years, followed by two in the bottle before release.
Dark, garnet cherry red with deeper robes. Opulent nose with a range of wild red fruit essences, raspberries and morello, supported by the presence of vanilla barrel age notes. Rich palate with profound grape tannin structure, wild fruits and savoury notes over a persistence of licorice, blueberries and cassis. A leafy finish culminates on a licorice spice complexity, a powerful yet graceful wine to serve alongside saddle of hare under balsamic reduction, meat jus and chorizo.
