Established 1853 by George Friedrich Schmidt, who acquired eighteen choice hectares of viticulture at Tanunda along Siegersdorf Road, for the peppercorn price of a pound per acre, Haan endures as one of the Barossa's quietly achieving, arcane old vineyards. Distinguished in the 21st century by a streak of prestigious industry accolades, Australian Wine Producer of Year, Gold Medal and Trophy for Best Blended Red at the illustrious London International Wine & Spirit Competition. Much of Haan's modest production is always retained by the softly spoken estate's most ardent enthusiasts. Shrewd aspirants will also seize the opportunity to retain a case or two of the heirloom vineyard's most recent vintage. A graceful style of opaque fruit characters, savoury and brooding, inebriating for its redolence of Barossa earth, mesmerising for its intricacy, dressed in a veil of refined, satin.. The dedicated Zema family are proudly traditional in their approach to viticulture, favouring hand pruning and dry growing vines to maximise quality. These practices are enhanced by the Zema team's three strategically selected prime vineyard locations, capitalising on Coonawarra's subtle climactic variations. Shiraz is vinified for a week on skins under strict temperature controls. A portion is barrel fermented to enhance complexity. Components are matured for two years in a selection of small French and American oak barrels, fully integrating the fruit, tannins and oak into a vibrant rich wine with profound bouquet and attractive flavours.
Rich purple colour with hints of red. Attractive with plum, dark black pepper and subtle spicy notes supported by notes of nutty, toasted oak. Concentrated varietal flavours of plum fruit with fine tannin roundness and persistence, emphasized by stylish vanillin oak. Zema recommend a glass of Family Selection with braised beef cheeks, pork belly or ripe, hard cheese.
