Old Richmond Gaol was one of Diemen Land's first prisons, built by the convicts themselves, of good old fashioned granite blocks, laboriously hauled in wooden hand carts and quarried from the ominously monikered Butchers Hill. Today, Butchers Hill is the site of the steepest sloping vineyard in Coal River Valley, invigorated by afternoon sea breezes and prevailing winds from the roaring forties, its highly auspicious, self mulching black Vertosols, yield extraordinary wines. Established by founding members of the Hobart Beefsteak & Burgundy Club, Butchers Hill represents three generations of passion amongst the nether vineyards of the Apple Isle. Not just a.. Legendary Penfold winemaker John Duval began his apprenticeship in 1974 under the tutelage of the late great Max Schubert. Duval's family had been supplying Penfolds with fruit and root stock for generations, many of South Australia's most prestigious vineyards were sown with cuttings from Duval's family property. Duval was awarded International Wine & Spirit Competition Winemaker of Year and twice London International Red Winemaker of Year. He now focuses on releasing painfully limited editions, assembled from precious parcels of elite Barossa vine, hand crafted by one of the world's most accomplished and peer respected winemakers... Just outside the Gippsland town of Leongatha, a few minutes down the road from the hallowed grounds at Bass Phillip estate, ten precious acres of exceptional terroir were planted in 1990, to artisanal clones of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. The propitious easterly aspects make the most of morning sun, an auspicious bequeath of fertile Ferrosols oblige the rootstock and infuse the fruit, while reducing the vigor and rationing the harvest. Lucinda Estate was never established as a producer of scale, its scant yields were always destined to be in pursuit of stunning Syrah and the perfect Pinot. Mitchell's largest vineyard is at Watervale, a very bleak place in the middle of winter at pruning time. It is known by the vineyard workers as Alcatraz, a place to do penance in the cold, wind and rain of a Clare Valley winter. Alcatraz only ever yields minimal harvests, source of the most memorable vintages in our nation's.. These old clare valley vines are just getting better»

Armchair Critic Under Over Heathcote Shiraz 2013 CONFIRM 2013 VINTAGE

Shiraz Heathcote Victoria
Under & Over is the way forward for Heathcote Shiraz, an impeccably balanced wine of individual character, complexity and charm. Under & Over are made according to a minimalist approach, the focus being on maximum expression of distinctive Heathcote Shiraz fruit character and heightened regionality. The winemaking team at Armchair Critic are well focused on appropriating the most intensely flavoured grapes to construct an excellent interpretation of early drinking Shiraz with outstanding depth of flavour and an impressively ripe, fruit filled finish.
Heathcote's ancient Cambrian soils combine with a warm, dry climate to create wines of profound brooding intensity and effortless power whilst retaining the structure and fine tannins to ensure good development. Sustainable viticulture leads to healthy harvests and moderate alcohol which is followed with minimal additions. Shiraz is sourced from established, low yielding sites primarily in the central north of Heathcote, most notably the splendid Colby Vineyard. Grapes are completely de-stemmed before a cool maceration and temperature controlled tank fermentation. Primarily vinified with very little wood treatment, a small component is transferred to seasoned oak barrels for a term of maturation.
Bright scarlet colour. Bouquet of red berries, plum and festive cake with hints of gamey spice and peppercorn aromas. The full, complex nose makes way to a fruit driven palate with a supple core of spiced red and black berries, strawberry and plum kept vital by soft acidity. An impressive depth of flavour and length for a forward drinking Shiraz, background oak and gracious tannins, generous and vibrant in it's youth.
