Shiraz Barossa South Australia
RWT stands for Red Winemaking Trial, the name given to the project internally when developmental work began on a campaign to redefine Barossa Shiraz at the highest level. Penfolds have sourced parcels of the most transcendent fruit from dedicated Barossa growers, chosen on the basis of aromatic qualities and fine texture rather than intensity or power. Since inaugural vintage, collectors have recognised the sheer class of RWT, already the wine has a strong secondary market following, illustrating its collectability and cellaring potential.
RWT breaks with the established Penfold tradition of assembling fruit from across the greater coterie of South Australia's viticultural precincts, to deliver a pure Barossa Shiraz that's matured exclusively in a high proportion of new French oak. Parcels which are earmarked for inclusion must express a developed level of ripeness, balanced tannins and clear varietal characters, to realize a style of RWT that's opulent and fleshy, contrasting with Grange, which is more muscular and assertive. The finished wine is fashioned to feature gentle Barossa warmth and eloquent varietal brightness. RWT is matured fifteen months in a selection of new and one year old French oak hogsheads. Alcohol 14.5%
Deep dark red. Ascending waves of blueberry and boysenberry, damson plum over cedar and ginger oak. Full bodied, textural generosity and richness, an emulsion of sarsparilla, chinotto and mascarpone replete with ripe, grande tannins and acidity conspiring to maintain balance and dimension. Masses of fruits, berries, chocolate, and mocha. Elegance with stature and charm.
