Shiraz Strathbogie Victoria
A stylish high country Shiraz, from fruit grown to the envigorating cool climes of Strathbogie Ranges. Plunkett Fowles retain many of Victoria's most splendid high altitude vineyards, the long cool ripening seasons yield harvests of the most intensely flavoured grapes with exciting milled spice characters and refined, velvet tannins. A choice component is treated to a term of age in a curious collection of large, highly precious 500 litre English oak casks which are over a hundred years of age.
Fruit is inoculated in a range of vessels, static fermenters, open fermenters and ten tonne roto fermenters. Each component is subject to slightly different handling techniques for the construct of a remarkably engaging and complex wine. The static fermenter usually produces the fruitiest batches, roto fermentation makes the most robust style of wine, open ferments yield a parcel of solid palate structure and ripe tannins. Upon completion, Blackwood Ridge is sent for a year's maturation in a mix of seasoned oak barrels and larger format, well aged 500 Litres oak casks.
Plum red colour, purple hues. Aromas of blood plum, sweet berry fruits and dark chocolate characters, seasoned by espresso and milled pepper notes. A well layered palate of currants and spiced plum, anise, black cherries and carob oak, all supported by a firm length of pliant, textured liquorice tannins. The wine of choice to accompany a Sunday lamb, gourmandise cottage pies or polpettone.
