Shiraz Langhorne Creek South Australia
Metala Original Plantings Shiraz is sourced from the original Metala Old Block and Cellar Block vines planted in 1891 and 1894 respectively. The superior vineyard sits right on the edge of the Bremer River, flooded during the winter, it's nourished by rich alluvial soils that provide natural irrigation to the vines. Planted on single wire trellises, which was at the time, cutting edge viticultural practice and nearly unheard of in the region, the ancient low-yielding vines enjoy a natural balance of fruit and leaves. Only ever released in exceptional vintages, the 1994 is an extremely rare flagship wine.
The river banks around the Old Cellar Blocks are lined with large stands of river red-gum, which is the environmental element thought to add the unique eucalypt character to the local fruit. Though having been re-trellised in recent times, the ancient vines are still carefully hand pruned and harvested. The fruit for this wine was carefully harvested and crushed into traditional style open fermenters. The must then underwent a long, gentle ferment with extended time on the skins to gently extract all of the flavour, colour and tannin. After fermentation was complete, the wine was pressed and racked before being transferred into new and prior use French and American oak for twenty-two months maturation.
Dark ruby red colour. Intense berry fruit notes are supported by spicy licorice, mint, eucalypt and subtle oak aromas on the nose. A rich sleek palate, smooth and slippery with cherries, loads of rich, opulent, mouthfilling fruit flavours, malt and leather characters, cedar and toast. Generous fruit, Original Plantings is a wine of intensity and richness, complexity and outstanding charm.
