Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Barossa McLaren South Australia
Offering compelling virtuosity in terms of pure drinkability and potential for cellaring, Bin 389 remains one of the stalwarts of the secondary wine market. The many vintages throughout it's distinguished history are eagerly sought by collectors. The continuity of magnificence in styling has remained unaffected by the development of viticulture and expansion of production. Still harmonious, ever seamless in it's expression of fruit and wood, vintage and winecraft, impeccably balanced between the Cabernet and Shiraz, it remains an approachable icon wine.
Penfolds is able to source quality fruit from a diverse range of vineyard sites, including some of the best and oldest vineyards in South Australia. Predominantly a Barossa Valley wine at one point, the Bin 389 is now a multi-district South Australian blend with fruit sourced from the wide expanse of old and premium vineyards across distinguished winegrowing districts. Over the last forty years, Bin 389 has developed a strong identity for its consistency, reliability and value. Wine consumers like it because it's delicious to drink, even when first released. Collectors appreciate it because the wine over-delivers on quality. As a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, it's a very Australian style of wine.
Deep red purple in colour with tawny robes. Cherry, herb garden, dried plum, chocolaty, nutmeg aromas. It's big, rich, dense and tightly packed with plenty of sweet fruit, plum, herb, nutmeg characters and fresh but solid tannins. Fully flavoured and persistent across the palate, displaying great balance between fruit, oak, acid and tannin. Blackberry and blackcurrant are courted by mouth puckering cabernet tannins, effortlessly conveying the chocolatey, mocha flavours and cedary oak. This is a tightly structured, lusty red wine which has gained immense complexity, and beautifully aged characters after years of development. It finishes grippy firm but there's plenty of flavour length. A very ready to drink Bin 389.
