Shiraz South Australia
The Kalimna vineyard is one of the finest in Australia and today produces much of the base wine for Grange. Some of the vines here are as old as one hundred years and these low yielding plants produce intensely flavoured fruit that was the inspiration for Bin 28. Today the Kalimna vineyard continues to play an integral part in Bin 28, although, like most of the Penfolds red wines, this wine is today a multi regional blend. Maturation in good seasoned oak is an integral part of this wine's character. The result is a wine rich in varietal character and a robust structure.
Introduced as one of the first Bin wines within the Penfolds portfolio, it has become an Australian classic. Fruit from the original Kalimna vineyard serves as the stylistic backbone for Bin 28. Within it's boundaries Kalimna has several vineyard blocks, each with it's own particular nuances of place. With so much good Shiraz available to Penfolds, it became possible to to improve the overall quality of the Bin 28 and preserve the generous warm climate style of the exceptional Kalimna fruit. A multi-district blend, it has won Red Wine of the Year twice, in 1991 and 1995 at the International Wine Challenge London.
Deep red in colour, 1990 has established itself as a classic Penfolds vintage. There are intense dark chocolate and sweet berry aromas, complex, revealing many characters in the glass - raspberry, prune, fruitcake, exotic spices and roasted chestnuts. Spice and demi-glace secondary notes add to the aromatic interest, flashes of liquorice, white chocolate and cinnamon arise with a swirl. Medium-bodied and mouth filling, plummy, berried fruits mesh with dark chocolate, mocha and spice notes. True to its fleshy, well structured style with ripe tannins and balanced acidity, Bin 28 enjoys universal appeal because of its intense fruit definition, ripe fleshy palate structure and generosity of flavour.
