Chardonnay South Australia
To make first class Chardonnay, Richmond Grove selects the most superior quality fruit. It is while ripening in the vineyard, that the finest parcels of Chardonnay are identified. Good varietal fruit character remains up front in the finished wine, attractive citrus and fig flavours are perfectly balanced by soft lemon acidity, all supported by luxurious creamy textures from the partial malolactic. A measure of toasty vanilla oak adds structure and length while infusing rich complexity.
Prior to harvest, blocks of Chardonnay are visited regularly by the Richmond Grove team, parcels of fruit showing intense, varietal flavours are harvested at optimum maturity throughout the cool of night. Batches are immediately pressed and cold settled with minimal skin contact, essential for a style of wine which is reliant on freshness and purity of fruit. The clarified juices are vinified at cooler temperatures in a selection of French oak barrels, treated to an extravagant regimen of lees stirring battonage, malolactics and maturation. Judicious exposure to oak casks is essential to ensure balance and structure of the finished wine, while preserving the vitality and crispness of refined Chardonnay. Alcohol 13.2%
Brilliant pale yellow hues. Initial aromas of fragrant lemon blossom, subtle notes of roasted nuts and spice, courtesy of French oak. Fresh, tight, mineral structure with a seductive softness and creaminess, lemon citrus flavours, a concentration of melons and peach over a length of delicate nutty vanillin oak, its soft textural mouthfeel resolving on a clean silky finish.
