Penfolds Grange Hermitage 1980 CONFIRM 1980 VINTAGE

Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon Barossa Adelaide Clare McLaren Coonawarra South Australia
A fabulous Grange, powerful, seamlessly constructed wine with perfect levels of glycerin and extract. The wine still seems very youthful, made in a very voluptuous, blockbuster Grange style. It is just now reaching its plateau of drinkability.

The 1980 Grange is predominantly Shiraz with a small amount of Cabernet Sauvignon (4%) from the Kalimna and other Barossa vineyards, Clare Valley, Magill Estate, McLaren Vale and Coonawarra. Generally good growing season with fine and warm conditions followed by a cool vintage. Another unusual vintage in that the grapes ripened late, but were very full. Maturation eighteen months in new American oak hogsheads. Alcohol 12.50% Acidity 6.00g/L pH 3.6
Deep crimson brick red. Intense plum, blackberry/ menthol, mocha /liquorice aromas, confection-like small berries, cherries and plums has a hint of treacle. Smooth and creamy, with flavours of mulberries, cassis and plums, it's obviously a cooler season Grange wrapped around by sweet oak. It opens up after time in the glass, the tannins are pronounced but offset by stylish, rich, concentrated dark berry chocolaty fruit. First vintage adopting consistent use of signature red Penfolds capsules. Winemaker comments by Don Ditter: Medium red/purple. Intense, fragrant chocolate cherry/prune dried fig aromas. Dense and chewy with generously ripe, prune/ chocolate fruit flavours, pronounced grainy tannins and superb length.
