Grenache Mourvedre Shiraz South Australia
In 1844 Dr Christopher Rawson Penfold planted vines on the slopes of Magill to produce fortified wine. By 1881 Penfolds was producing a third of South Australia's entire fortified wine production. Father Grand Tawny is a tribute to the century and a half of excellence practised within the bluestone cellar walls of Magill Estate. The combination of extended barrel maturation and Penfolds tradition of uncompromising vinification skills has achieved a wine with exemplary fruit richness, mellow aged rancio complexity and great length of flavour.
Penfolds encapsulates a century and a half of winemaking and embodies the traditions of Australia fortifieds. Father 10 Years Grand Tawny Port is a multi vintage blend of Grenache, Mourvedre and Shiraz wines. Individual components are aged in small oak casks for at least ten years before being assembled into a most satisfying style of fortified wine. The active juices are treated to doses of brandy spirit, enriching the ferments and preserving natural fruit sugars, introducing complexity and contributing palate warmth. Individual barrels are topped up on occasion as the angels take their share, after which the choicest parcels are individually trialled to determine the final assemblage.
Dark mahogany colour. Concentrated nose, rich and honeyed fruit, coffee and prune, barrel aged rancio complexity and earthly spirit lift. The luscious palate goes beyond the flavour spectrum to show exciting intensity balanced by a mellow, smooth mouthfee, butterscotch and raisined fruit, nutty complexity merges with lifted barrel aged characters before a dry, cleansing finish. This generously flavoured Tawny mates beautifully with rich desserts and ripe cheese.
