Yalumba have acquired an uncanny ability to create their pure varietal wines around the unique characteristics of the grape as affected by the vagaries of the vintage. In this case, the result is an eminently drinkable, crisp white with dazzling fruit and refreshing acidity. Yalumba brings great resources to bear on research at the nursery level, developing highly specialised techniques and understanding the more esoteric wine grapes. Y Series showcases the affinity between Shiraz and Viognier, co-fermented to capture their synergy.
The early picked Sauvignon Blanc contributes excellent flavours, while those that ripen later add weight and texture. The grapes are given twelve hours skin maceration prior to draining and pressing. Juices are cold settled then fermented using an aromatic yeast to retain and enhance fresh, crisp varietal character. Finished wines are then left on light lees until assemblage. Shiraz and Viognier were co-fermented in large static potters and rotary fermenters. Warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation and an average of three to five days post ferment maceration have aided in extracting soft fleshy tannins and building palate structure, delivering a stylishly aromatic wine, plush with softness and drinkability.
The Sauvignon Blanc exudes lively and zesty aromas of lemongrass, citrus peel, and guava with an undertone of grassiness. The palate offers layers of flavours - lemons and tropical fruit and fresh cut herbs - with textures that are succulent and long. The crunchy characters are punctuated by lively acid, closing to a crisp, zesty finish. The Shiraz Viognier emanates aromas of violet and sweet berrries with lifted fragrances of apricot and musk. Attractive characters of spice and licorice, plums and the pungency of Viognier as expressed by nuances of marmalade and jam. The palate is fresh with black currant and liquorice, chewy and delicious. Berry-rich mid-palate fruits with a soft even texture and fine tannin finish.
