Pinot Gris Grigio Murray Victoria
A leading figure in the Australian wine industry for decades, Garry Crittenden was founder and chief winemaker of the renowned Dromana Estate, now a publicly listed company. Today he turns his efforts to hand crafting small amounts of the finest, stylized wines. One of Crittenden's pre-occupations is with the abstruse varietals. He has developed a flair for engineering the Pinot Gris grape into both the Italianate and Franco genres. Geppetto presents Pinot Gris under an Alsation light, with rich aromas and a complex, fruit filled palate.
From good vineyards in Victoria's Murray Valley. To ensure low phenolics, both in the colour and on the palate, the hand harvested fruit is quickly whole bunch pressed, without de-stemming, into tanks where enzymes can assist settling of the solids, which takes place over forty eight hours. The crystal clear juice is then transferred to a temperature controlled tank and inoculated with yeast chosen to impart texture and mouthfeel. The choice is to confer a Pinot Gris character to the wine as distinct from the Pinot Grigio style. The long slow ferment takes place at 14C and is terminated to retain the slightest touch of residual sugar, a feature more in keeping with the French style of Pinot Gris wines. Alcohol 13.5%
Light straw colour. Fresh aromas of stonefruit and musk are evident on the nose. The palate is rich and generous with evident acidity acting as a counterbalance to the intentionally retained residual sugar, helping to provide the wine with great length and intensity.
