Shiraz Limestone Coast South Australia
By winemaking supremo Ben Riggs, the sole objective at Mt Monster is to produce the best possible from a unique site. The pursuit of great wine can be seen in the meticulous management of the vineyard. Low crop yields and small grape bunches of intense flavour are the aim. Vine balance and reduced vigor are achieved, the harvest is commenced only when fruit reaches full flavour development. Mount Monster is assembled from select barrels of estate grown Shiraz, which can best demonstrate the intensity of fruit balanced by an integration of oak.
Planted on own rootstock and located in the Padthaway valley, which is comprised of rich Terra rosa soils, Mount Monster enjoys excellent sun exposure, producing grapes of optimum flavour, colour and tannin development. Warm summer days are moderated each evening by coastal winds that cool the vines and result in a longer ripening period. Grapes are vinified in static fermenters at controlled temperatures to retain varietal aromatics. Upon completion, batches are held on skins for up to ten days, extracting soft fleshy tannins and building structure. A frugal treatment of French and American oak ensures maximum retention of upfront fruit character in the finished wine. Alcohol 14.5%
Rich purple colour. Ripe blackberry and plum nose, floral notes, satsuma plum and soft scented fruits. Subtle oak use adds complexity and provides structural framework whilst allowing primary Shiraz characters to shine through. Varietal fruit driven palate, with cherry/ berry fruit and spice flavours. Fine, soft tannins complement the spice/ berry flavours and provide support on a generous, mouthfilling finish.
