Shiraz Beechworth Victoria
Star Lane are a low yielding, small vineyard operation who hand craft small batches of the most superlative Beechworth wines. The unique serendipity of richly loamed soils with sloped aspects offering exposure to sunny days and cool nights is idyllic for the flavour development and thorough ripening of Shiraz. Brilliantly integrated and soundly structured, its length of classy French oak supports an extended palate of exciting pastoral savouryness and delectable black liquorice fruit.
Shiraz grapes are hand picked off vines planted to red loam over mudstone soils and processed immediately. Fruit is destemmed and crushed into tank where the natural indigenous yeasts present on skins initiate vinification. After several days of hand plunging and pumpovers every four hours in open top fermenters, a period of cold maceration is followed by a laborious basket press to extract the final juice from the berries and skins. Settled overnight and transferred to barrel for a secondary fermentation and malolactic through the winter into spring, for completion in early summer before the heat begins. Matured up to two years in a selection of new and seasoned Sirugue & Bossuet French oak barrels.
Dark black cherry red, vibrant purple hue. The nose is richly intense with blackberry jam and copious black berry notes. Deep, generous, and balanced, the palate is spicy and elegant, layer upon layer of fruit seamlessly intermingle with magnificent, finely grained tannins. A structurally elegant, complex wine of great breeding and class. A sheer delight.
