Established 1908, Redman's Coonawarra are still made by the Redman brothers from fruit grown to the original family parcels. The tradition began 1901 when Bill Redman, at the tender age of fourteen, made the journey to take up an apprenticeship at the John Riddoch wineworks and to labour amongst Coonawarra's founding vineyards. The relationship between Penfolds and the cool climate, higher altitudes of the Adelaide Hills goes back to the company's origins. Dr Penfold established his winemaking venture at Mackgill in 1844 to make Grenache wines which he would prescribe to patients. Exclusively hand picked grapes, with the inclusion of some whole bunches for complexity, are cold soaked and crushed before the free run juices, to the exception of any pressings, are naturally fermented followed by a single racking off gross lees. The finished wine is matured eight months in a combination of new and seasoned French oak barriques, before bottling, filtered but unfined.
Dark cherry red. Cherries and dark bramble fruits abound with attractive forest notes and lingering warm spice Subtle charry oak adds additional complexity in a discreet manner, leaving the bright fruit nuances to remain at centre stage. Strawberry and red berry fruits coat the mouth on a bed of soft tannins. A long and persistent finish that lingers and lingers, the wine's silky texture leaves the palate yearning for more.
