Shiraz Viognier Adelaide Hills South Australia
Stephen Pannell is one of Australia's most decorated winemakers, Jimmy Watson and twice Max Schubert Trophy winner, London Wine Challenge International Red Winemaker of Year and Chairman National Wine Show. He has managed to find time in between tours of duty at Wirra Wirra, Tintara and BRL Hardy, to work vintage in Burgundy, at the illustrious Chateau Mouton Rothschild and amongst the grand old vines of Barolo. A mostly Syrah wine with a de rigueur inclusion of good Viognier, all picked off a superior low yielding Adelaide Hills vineyard.
From a choice site in Adelaide Hills near Echunga, off vines planted to well drained, granitic soils, 410 metres above sea level. Fruit is completely hand harvested and placed into small, traditional open top fermenters. A component of whole bunches is introduced, vintage permitting, to initiate partial carbonic maceration, extract fine stem tannins and enhance complexity. Temperatures are kept between a wide range of 15°C and 34°C throughout a fortnight of vinification, while treating the ferments to cap management regimens of hand plunging and pumpovers. The finished wine is matured twenty months in a selection of seasoned and new, large format French oak barrels and smaller oak puncheons.
Deep purple red colour. Highly perfumed, vibrant and complex, floral notes of violet and dried herb, red currants and hints of black liquorice. Juicy black fruits with a measure of peppery spice over gently integrated dry, earthy tannins. A Syrah Viognier that's elegant and refined, an underlying sense of power and depth of flavour, a joy to share alongside fine cuisine.
