Shiraz South Australia
Koonunga Hill is very much a reflection of the Penfolds winemaking philosophy and style. Since the inaugural vintage of 1976, Koonunga Hill's reputation has been built upon widespread acclaim. The fundamentals endure, find the best fruit and spare no expense. Treat each parcel to the full course of Penfold efficacy and age the finished wine in a selection of the finest oak. Koonunga Hill continues the tradition, representing a profound experience of the greater South Australian Shiraz style, while carrying the Penfolds assurance of quality.
Koonunga Hill has established itself as one of Australia's favourite Shiraz. Premium harvests from some of the finest vineyards are selected to maintain consistency, quality and style, a significant proportion is sourced from splendid Barossa sites. At the heart of the Penfolds philosophy lies a value that ultimately it is the quality of fruit and approachability of the final wine which are paramount. After completing primary and secondary ferments, Koonunga Hill is matured in a selection of fine American and French oak barrels. Koonunga Hill offers excellent palate structure and considerable length, very ready for full enjoyment upon release, while offering excellent cellarability.
Dense red with purple hues. Dark fruit aromas of cherries and plum with a fresh red berry lift. Floral notes, hints of spice, white chocolate and vanillin notes add complexity. Medium bodied, tasting of blueberries and spice, pepper and hints of liquorice contribute complexity, rhubarb and black olive notes add savouryness. A rich, ripe and generous wine with voluptuous full flavoured fruit, the tannins are soft and fine, integrating beautifully with the balanced background of spicy oak.
