Shiraz Murray Darling New South Wales
The Trentham Murphys were amongst the first settlers to establish vineyards near Mildura in 1909. They remain one of the most eminent grower families and make the region's most prestigious wines. The Murphys endeavour to preserve the health of Murray Darling's wetlands, so essential to the national ecosystem. Every bottle of River Retreat affords a donation to the Murray Darling Environmental Foundation. A delicious drop in its own right, representing exceptional value, the Shiraz of choice to accompany char grilled rib or braised shanks in red wine jus.
The philosophy at Trentham Estate has always been to produce the finest wines from the healthiest environment, with an emphasis on balance and style. Jack and Moya Murphy established agriculture on a large sheep station at Trentham Cliffs in 1960. Their vineyard flourished in the rich red loam limestone soils, nurtured by water from the Murray River, they now make the region's finest wines. Shiraz is harvested at full ripeness, fruit is crushed into controlled fermenters and vinified for a week on skins, treated to regular pumpovers for optimal extraction of colour, flavour and tannin. Upon completion, batches are pressed into a selection of French and American oak, followed by the final assemblage. Alcohol 14.0%
Deep red, purple hues. Lithe nose of cocoa and milled spice, bramble berries, currants and peppered plum. Dark cherries and ripe plum flavours on a long, delicious fleshy palate, black currants, licorice and carob oak, supported by soft chamois tannins, its persistence of fruit and exquisite balance, resolving on a silky, aromatic, lasting finish.
