Grenache Shiraz Mourvedre McLaren Vale South Australia
Half Grenache, the balance in Mourverdre and Shiraz, Stump Jump is an assemblage of components that flowed down from the many senior wines in the d'Arenberg stable, including parcels from a range of growers. McLaren Vale GSM that packs plenty of interest, like an Aussie Cotes-du-Rhone, with berries and spice, savoury meatyness and fragrant earth. A touch of dried herbs adds a savoury edge with fine, lifted tannins providing a long finish. It's a cracking wine with sophistication, but don't worry it's still a lot of fun.
All the red winemaking at D'Arenberg is highly traditional and sublimely simple. Stump Jump is a collation of parcels Mourvedre, Grenache and Shiraz, some of which only just missed the cut into the estate's most revered wines. Once picked, the fruit is gently crushed in an ancient Demoisy open mouthed, rubber toothed crusher and pumped into submerged cap open fermenters. All of d'Arenberg's reds are inoculated in traditional headed down open top fermenters. Upon completion, Stump Jump is gently pressed through d'Arenberg's nineteenth century Coq and Bromley Tregoning basket press prior to a spell of ageing in seasoned French and American oak casks.
Dry red colour, rose petal hue. The nose features plum and bright red fruits with a hint of roasted meats, earth, pepper and exotic spice. Mulberry and plum of the Grenache combine with the blackberry, spice and white pepper of Shiraz, the palate is dry but fruity with soft tannins providing balance. The finish is lovely soft, rich in flavour with savoury red fruit characters and hints of vanillin that are characteristic of d'Arenberg.
