Merlot Coonawarra South Australia
The brothers Zema go back a long way with viticulture, their family operated a wine bar in Calabria and Papa worked at Wynn's for over twenty years, planting, pruning and picking. Zema possess a natural affinity with the land, their first acquisition in Australia was a contemplative choice, a small block of mature vines in the very heart of Coonawarra. Merlot grows brilliantly here, the highly auspicious Terra Rossa soils yield wines with rich cherry violet bouquets and flavours, tender tannins and an intensity of fruit that's drinking magnificently.
Zema's vines are flattered by a regimen of the most fastidious management, training and pruning is carried out to the most exacting standards and yields are purposely kept low to optimize the quality of harvest. Merlot is picked to a schedule determined by full physiological ripeness as the fruit achieves an intensity and concentration of flavour. Grapes are crushed, de-stemmed into static fermenters and vinified under strict temperature controls for a week. A portion of the ferments are completed in barrel to enhance integration with oak. The finished components are matured sixteen months in a selection of French barriques. Alcohol 13.5%
Attractive dark medium colour with purple hues. Ripe red berry, cassis and dark cherry nose supported by nutty French oak. The palate displays attractive soft plum and complex berry flavours. Extended French oak maturation has infused a vibrant richness and finely integrated, delicate oak character. Well structured and showing an outstanding depth of fruit, drinking very well after a few years of bottle age, match it with paella and coq au vin or a farced and well seasoned quail.
