Merlot South Australia
Y Series deliver wines of clear varietal profiles, combined with a generosity of fruit and expression of the vineyard as influenced by the vagaries of the growing season. Classically Merlot, a soft forward drinking red wine exhibiting delightful aromas of ripe berries, plum petals and spice. The label depicts the vineyard mascot, with its wet nose, soft fur and sparkling, clear eyes, a metaphor of Merlot affability and reminder of loyal, long term relationships, an enduring principle of Yalumba culture.
Merlot is sourced from good vineyards and dedicated growers who have been supplying Yalumba for many years, in some cases for generations. Yalumba insists that the vines are treated to the most exacting standards, as each parcel of Merlot is harvested at its optimum flavour development, so essential to achieving a balanced wine. A collation of harvests, selected on the basis of primary fruit character and refined tannins, are vinified in a combination of static potter and rotary fermenters, warm temperatures at the onset of fermentation, followed by several days maceration on skins and a term on gross lees, serve to extract soft fleshy tannins while building fine structure.
An inviting crimson colour. Red currants, violets and eucalypt bouquets. Medium bodied palate with varietal characters ranging from spiced fruit cake to black cherries over a structure of very fine, velvet tannins. The generous fruit flavours contribute a fleshy, supple textural mouthfeel. Blue stonefruit flavours and gentle tannins lead to a lovely soft finish. Serve with Kangaroo fillets, red currant reduction and sweet potato mash.
