Somewhere near the Seaview end of McLaren Vale's Chapel Hill Road, a perfunctory passerine perched her pincers astride a pair of power poles and saw herself alit. Down she went amongst the dry grown branches of an old Grenache vineyard, setting the valuable veterans ablaze. The scorched site eventually came to the attention of a winemaking trio, the Messrs Leske, Tynan & Cooke, Masters of Wine and a venerable vintner, all driven by a consuming passion to make greater Grenache. Thistledown vintage very small amounts of the most extraordinary Grenache. Beautifully detailed and conspicuously elegant, their floral bouquets and graceful finish emulate the aromatic lift and peacock's tail of a prettily perfumed Pinot Noir. Pinot Gris Grigio Mornington Victoria
Kevin McCarthy and Kathleen Quealy pioneered the development of Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris wines on the Mornington Peninsula in the late 1980s. Pinot Grigio and Gris are the same grape, how they are grown and handled throughout the vinification determines their caste into the French or Italianate styling. T'Gallant are well versed at both, the maestros of Mornington. Italian have a tendency to pick grapes earlier for a racy, savoury style. The French wait for riper flavours, developing richer palates that are complex, fuller and fatter.

T'Gallant's style is expressive of Mornington, deft of handling and highly polished, devout in viticulture and the purity of fruit. Each batch of Pinot Gris is assessed regularly on its journey to bottle, integrity of the wine is paramount. Sometimes the destiny of an individual block has been planned many years in advance. Juices are pressed right out with no fining. Vineyard parcels are all kept separate as a wild ferment ensues without the introduction of any yeasts. Natural warm fermentations achieve lively fruit character and gossamer yeast aromas. Upon completion, parcels are assembled and the finished wine bottled unfiltered nor fined. Time spent on sedimentery lees adds texture and complexity.
Pale gold colour. A generous and weighty Pinot Gris, potent and true to style. The nose is ripe and very complex with floral notes and touches of tropical fruit. Honey and pears, dusty and spicy aromas precede a long, tangy, lemony palate, soft with nut and nougat character. A wine of succulence, generous with palate weight and richness.

T'Gallant was founded by winemakers Kathleen Quealy and Kevin McCarthy who are leaders in Australian cool climate viticulture and winemaking and pioneers of Australian Pinot Grigio and Pinot Gris.The philosophy of Kevin and Kathleen dramatically evolved when they arrived on the Mornington Peninsula in the late 80s. They directed their focus on viticulture, knowing this was the key to making the greatest wine.

T'Gallant have contracted out many vignerons to grow Pinot Gris on the Mornington Peninsula, and have provided the management company that would harmoniously produce the superior vintages they desired. Today, their Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noirs are understated and sensual, relying on excellence in both the vineyard and the winery. T'Gallant Cellar Door, La Baracca Trattoria, tasting and educational area, ensure an enchanting winery and tourism experience. They are sited around the original apple cool store, a rustic, ambient area for visitors.

The T'Gallant winemaking style is expressive. Natural warm fermentations ensure gossamer-like yeast aromas. Each wine is assessed regularly on its journey to the bottle. Reductive characters are blown off with air. Gentle fining when required uses natural proteins and egg white. Blends of vineyards occur after fermentation, however the ultimate destiny of a vineyard's fruit may have been determined many years before.
