Cabernet Sauvignon Coonawarra South Australia
Mildara was at the vanguard of the rediscovery of the Coonawarra region. In 1953 Mildara's Ron Haselgrove bought 12,735 litres of Coonawarra red wine from Bill Redman. Ron loved Redman's wine so much, hewas inspired in 1955 to purchase Mildara's first 12.5ha of the Coonawarra's famous Terra Rossa soil. This latest release is a luscious woody fruity wine with elements of earth, chocolate sponge and red berries.
Mildara was the first major winery to invest in the terroir known affectionately as the Medoc of the South. The highly acclaimed early Mildara blends were the forerunners to Jamieson's Run, launched in the 80s to celebrate Mildara's centenary. Ron Haselgrove assembled experimental blends to make wines which still rank as Australia's finest. Ron produced the earliest Coonawarra blends and interplanted red varietals with Cabernet Sauvignon, in imitation of the technique practised in Bordeaux. Vintage 2005 delivered warm conditions throughout, trouble-free harvest, and good Cabernet grapes at slightly below average yields.
Blue crimson red with an earthy halo indicating the ability to age. Bouquets of loganberry, cedar, violets and cassis with a good whiff of redcurrants and aspirations of a baked cherried duckling. On the tongue there are bacony tarry wood nuances and cleverly woven highlights of chocolate sponge. A magnificent palate brimming with candied sweet leaves of tobacco and charry, very fine cedary afterhints that develop with breathing.
