Sauvignon Blanc Semillon Viognier Adelaide McLaren South Australia
Is it any wonder that this wine has slipped into McLaren Vale vernacular as Scrubby White? While the satiatingly mouthfilling mix of grapes may twist tongues, it also offers a rich array of fruit flavours, lead by a whoosh of refitalizing Adelaide Hills fruit, to inspire the most apathetic palate. Crisp, tantalizingly complex and delightfully fresh, Wirra Wirra complete the puzzle and give you something to ponder over a glass of judiciously chilled white, while you wrestle with the words Scrubby, Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc.
Scrubby Rise vineyard (which is ironically flat and without scrub) supplies the name as well as much of the fruit which goes into this unique cepage. Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon are picked whilst still displaying fresh leafy and grassy notes. Grapes are destemmed, crushed and chilled to 5°C, juices are pressed keeping the free run and pressings separate. Juices are cold settled below 5°C for a week and racked from gross lees, warmed to 16°C, inoculated and fermented completely to dry. A combination of traditional vinification techniques are applied throughout the winemaking process to enhance palate texture and infuse complexity.
Pale straw with green tinges. Lifted fresh leaf notes, complemented by tropical hints, melon and lime juice. Bright and lively, the palate launches with lemon zest, peach and apricots before hints of passion and tropical fruit notes lingering. Soft mouthwatering acid leads to a long and textural finish. Drink young while young alongside char grilled chicken and field pea risotto, garnished by freshly grated gruyere.
