There were two scrub covered parcels of land, just outside Pokolbin village along McDonalds Road, that local council had long set aside for use as cricket ground and cemetery. Both were ultimately auctioned off to the highest bidders and sown to vine. A third undeveloped site became the subject of a long running feud among the new and old neighbours. Dodgy invoices between the rivals were exchanged and the division of firewood became a further cause of contention. A truce was eventually called by the two protagonists, Brokenwood and Hungerford Hill, for the sake of healthy viticulture. Chapel Hill's mantra is to produce wines with pure varietal and regional characters. Grown to the cooler climes of the Adelaide Hills this fine example of Pinot Grigio displays all the elements associated with the variety. Hints of guava, lychee and nashi pear overlay a textured, viscous, dry spicy palate with subtle mineral notes.

Pinot Grigio from the Adelaide Hills sub region of Mt Torrens, vines are planted to sandy loam soils scattered with ironstone gravel and quartzite. The underlying principle is to achieve a healthy balanced vineyard, neither vigorous nor stressed. Grapes are hand harvested and promptly delivered to the winery. Skin contact and maceration is kept to a minimum, avoiding any undesirable colour and phenolics. Whole berries are loaded into the membrane press on a delicate cycle, free run juices are isolated at 558 litres per tonne. A slow gradual cool ferment is then followed by eight months on yeast lees to encourage the integration of fruit flavours and a fine, textured palate. Alcohol 13.0%
Light yellow with green tinges. Alluring aromas of floral and pinenut, lemon preserve and apricot over a scent of calico. Displays guava, lychees and nashi pear flavours underpinned by a lingering, spicy, grainy and minerally palate. Fashioned to a drier style of Grigio, in combination with the textural mouthfeel, showcases the supple nuances of the grape as well as ensuring that the wine can be enjoyed in partnership with all good food.

Chapel Hill
Chapel Hill takes its name from the historic ironstone church built at the property in 1865

Chapel Hill Winery is entirely in the Hills Face Zone. In 1990 environmental consultants were briefed to advise regarding development in this sensitive rural preserve. The estate obtained planning approval from the Minister for Environment and Planning in 1991, and built the winery in 1993. Chapel Hill is the embodiment of the wine and food experience delivered using the best of environmental practices by people who are passionate about their product and the McLaren Vale winegrowing region.

Chapel Hill

Originally the Christian Bible church and parish school, the church closed in its centenary year (1965) and fell into disrepair until its restoration in the 1970s. The church is today a tourist attraction and serves as the cellar door at Chapel Hill. In December 2000 Chapel Hill changed ownership once more, this time being purchased by the Swiss family of Mr Thomas Schmidheiny. The Schmidheiny family also own Cuvaison Winery in California and vineyards in Argentina and Switzerland.

In 1994 the winery received a commendation for "A development sensitive to the environment in the Hills Face Zone". In 2003 Chapel Hill obtained planning approval to build the Chapel Hill Winery Gourmet Retreat, the boutique hotel and cooking facility.

Set into the hillside, constructed of stone in browns and greys, using recycled materials, the Gourmet Retreat construction is cognisant of minimising its impact on its vineyard environs. In 2005 the company received a merit award in the Nature Foundations Environment Award.
