Jim Barry was a pioneer of the Australian wine industry, the first academically qualified winemaker to take up Clare Valley viticulture in 1949. Hurtle Walker first picked grapes as a ten year old on the celebrious Magill property in 1900. Apprenticed to the legenderies Monsieur Duray and Leon Mazure, Walker was placed in charge of sparkling wine production for the historic Auldana Cellars at the ripe old age of 21. He saw service as a soldier in World War I and made great wine until 1975. Established 1908, Redman's Coonawarra are still made by the Redman brothers from fruit grown to the original family parcels. The tradition began 1901 when Bill Redman, at the tender age of fourteen, made the journey to take up an apprenticeship at the John Riddoch wineworks and to labour amongst Coonawarra's founding vineyards. Bill Redman's earliest vintages were sold off to other companies but it was not until 1952 that the Redman family released their own wines under the moniker Rouge Homme. Clos Figueras retain some of the oldest vineyards in Priorat, Serras del Priorat is a compilation of younger vine harvests, fifteen or so years of age, fashioned into a more fruit driven style for approachability, while remaining eloquent of the excellence and sophistication which define Priorat wines. A seamless, well rounded cépage, half Grenache, the balance in Cabernet Sauvignon, Carignan and Syrah, redolent with the perfumes of the region, tightly wound around a core of berry lozenge characters, supported by a chamois of smooth, savoury tannins.
