Gold Winner Limestone Coast Wine Show!
Shiraz Mount Benson South Australia
The Mount Benson region has supplied fruit to many of Australia's celebrated wineries, it has also been the source of Shiraz for some of the most memorable vintages. Less than an hour's drive away lies Coonawarra, both regions share similarities but Mount Benson is cooler and the ripening season is longer. The remarkable quality of cool ripened Shiraz, inspired one of Coonawarra's pioneer winemaking families, to plant vines at Mount Benson, achieving a fragrantly spiced red of sound structure, concentrated fruit and amazing palate length.
Only twenty five years young, Mount Benson is quickly establishing a reputation as a premier viticultural precinct. Strongly influenced by the Southern Ocean, it yields a quality of Shiraz which can be characterized as a stylistic compromise between the piquant berry fruit of Coonawarra and soft savouryness of McLaren Vale. Parcels of Shiraz are macerated, inoculated and treated to a traditional vinification, the cap is pumped over and plunged to infuse character into the wine. When the perfect balance between fruit, acid and tannins are achieved, the musts are pressed and batches are transferred into a selection of fine oak barrels for a course of maturation before assembling into the finished wine.
Deep magenta colour, bright purple hues. A complex array of primary fruit aromas, currants and plum, dark chocolate and herbs, seasoned by freshly milled spice. Dense and creamy, fruit filled palate, restrained use of oak adds texture and sweetness while providing a firm structure of mouth coating tannins, before a long, ingering finish.
