Three British Army officers, in their capacity as agents of the East India Company, established one of Western Australia's first agricultural enterprises in 1836. Named after Captain Richmond Houghton, it was not until Thomas Yule's stewardship that vines were planted and the first vintage of Houghton wine flowed in 1859. Established 1908, Redman's Coonawarra are still made by the Redman brothers from fruit grown to the original family parcels. The tradition began 1901 when Bill Redman, at the tender age of fourteen, made the journey to take up an apprenticeship at the John Riddoch wineworks and to labour amongst Coonawarra's founding vineyards. Bill Redman's earliest vintages were sold off to other companies but it was not until 1952 that the Redman family released their own wines under the moniker Rouge Homme. Redman was finally branded under its own label in 1966, it remains one of the most enduring marques in Coonawarra. Coonawarra graziers have access to the finest soils for viticulture. Doug Balnaves was born in the very heart of Coonawarra, quite near the sacred cricket pitch at Penola. An accomplished herdsman and shearer, Balnaves took up the challenge of planting vineyards in 1971. Working under the tutelage of legendary Coonawarra winemaker Bill Redman, Balnaves immersed himself in the culture of the vine, ultimately establishing a grande marque of Coonawarra and securing the inaugural presidency of the Coonawarra Vignerons Association. A fine blend of 20 Year Old Tawnys, another important breakthrough for the Port trade, broadening the perceived image of Port in its traditional markets. An outstanding wine that epitomises everything that is great about a superbly balanced 20 Year Old Tawny. Traditional Portuguese grape varietals from the Douro Valley, Touriga Nacional and Touriga Franca, Tinta Barroca, Tinta Roriz and Tinto Cão. Fruit is treated to vinification through natural yeasts at temperatures between 24C and 28C. Once the must has fermented to the desired degree of sweetness, usually within forty eight hours, fortification takes place with the addition of a 77% grape brandy, a balance of 80% must and 20% brandy.
A translucent copper tone. Beautiful soft nutty aromas gained by a full twenty years ageing in seasoned oak casks. Otima is rich and delicate, but never cloying, the tannins and acidity ensure balance and perfect length.
