Graeme Melton and a mate were travelling across South Australia in 1973, their EH Holden was in dire need of maintenance and Graeme took up casual work at a passing winery. The site supervisor was Peter Lehmann and young Graeme had his epiphany on the road to Barossa Valley. Lehmann suggested that Graeme change his name to Charlie and take the pilgrimmage to Vallee Rhone. Charlie became prepossessed with the culture of old vines Grenache, Shiraz and Mourverdre. He returned to the Barossa, at a time when old vineyard fruit was made into flagon Port and growers were destroying their historic sites in return for government grants. Charlie emabarked on a crusade to conserve and restore the ancient vines, establishing his cellars at Tanunda along Krondorf Road. He has since retained the most precious parcels, once destined for the logger's axe, they are now the.. Melton makes a mean mourvedre»
Beechworth attracts the most artisanal winemakers, the region's rich mineral soils and parched, undulating terrains, breed wines of vigorous flavour, crystalline textures and boney savoury tannins. The first parcel of Crown Land in the region was acquired by Isaac Phillips in 1857, he christened his estate Golden Ball and built a hotel named Honeymooners Inn, servicing miners on their way up the steep trails to the Beechworth goldfields. The old pub remains but the surrounding land has been turned over to viticulture, planted to vine in the nineteen naughties, it produces a quality of wine that's reserved for the nation's most exclusive winelists. Served by savvy sommeliers and savoured by the most discerning patrons, the limited releases of Golden Ball are an essential experience for aspirants of grand Victorian growths... At Vega Sicilia, the oak cask is an essential part of the vinification, forging a true consortium with the wine. In the same way that the grape is an achievement of the vineyard itself, it is essential for Vega Sicilia that most of the casks are coopered at the winery. A cepage of varying proportions, Tempranillo and Merlot, Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon, the separate vintages of Vega Sicilia are treated to an extended maturation in a selection of new and seasoned, French and American oak casks and larger format vats for many years before assemblage.
Scarlet colour with dark core. Complex nose of bright, vibrant fruit fragrances, cassis, cherry and spice over a background of tobacco, mineral and aromatic oak. A sweet and savoury palate of youthful, dark berry flavours supported by velvet tannins and liqueured, piquant acids before a seemingly endless finish.
