One of the closely guarded secrets which remained cardinal to the preeminence of Grange Hermitage, was the sacred tally of exceptional vineyards which were called on to provide fruit for the new world's most stately Shiraz. The elite Grange Growers Club is one of the nation's more exclusive fellowships, an illustrious canon of distinguished wine growing families which are the stuff of Australian viticultural history. One of McLaren Vale's most eminent dynasties, Oliver's of Taranga were an essential inclusion into many of the mighty Grange's most memorable vintages. Oliver Taranga's estate flagship HJ Reserve Shiraz represents peerless value for a wine of its provenance, power, persistence and depth, $50.99 and drinking sensationally... Established 1968 by Word War II flyer Egerton E.S Dennis, on ninety acres of McLaren Flat along the prestigious winegrowing terroirs at Kangarillla Road, the Dennis family pioneered the production of Mead alongside colleague and enthusiast John Maxwell. The Warre's winemaking team knew that a small vintage was at hand for growing season 2000 but had not anticipated quite how small it would be, at Cavadinha, the lowest yields in living memory. The old mixed plantings, aged fifty to fifty five years, produced an average of only 420 grams per vine. This unprecedented low yield was due to the appalling weather during flowering and without a doubt, contributed to the marvellous concentration of the wines in vintage 2000. The small size of the berries, crushed by foot treading in granite lagares, produced wines of outstanding quality and intensity, exuding expressive Esteva characters.
Very dark colour, concentrated inky black. Lovely fresh aromas of violets. Layer and layer of ripe blackberry fruit, intensely rich and full bodied. Sweetness and tannins bind this wine together to form a perfect harmonious structure.
