Whence Hutton Vale»
Samuel Smith migrated from Dorset England to Angaston in the colony of South Australia circa 1847, he took up work as a gardener with George Fife Angas, the virtual founder of the colony. In 1849, Smith bought thirty acres and planted vines by moonlight, the first ever vintages of Yalumba. One of his most enduring legacies were some unique clones of Shiraz, which were ultimately sown to the illustrious Mount Edelstone vineyard in 1912. Angas's great grandchild Ron Angas acquired cuttings from the Edelstone site and migrated the precious plantings to his pastures at Hutton Vale. There's Magic At Metala»
Right around the time that Frank Potts was planting his nascent Bleasdale Vineyards during the 1850s, an eccentric Prussian named Herman Daenke established a homestead along the banks of Bremer River, which he called Metala. The site was planted to viticulture by Arthur Formby in 1891 and became one of Langhorne Creek's most productive vineyards, it continues to supply fruit for a number of prestigious national brands. Legendary winemaker Brian Dolan took the radical step of bottling Metala under its own label in 1959 and won the inaugural Jimmy Watson Trophy in 1962. From humble beginnings to a distinguished world wide brand, Konrad Wines have grown out of one man's love for Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc

Family owned, operated and grown, hand crafted and estate bottled, Konrad hope that you get as much pleasure out of their wines as the happy team enjoy making them. After many years of international success, Konrad Wines remain fully owned by the Hengstler family, Konrad and Sigrun, their two sons, Conrad and Carlo. The Hengstlers originally migrated from Germany to Australia. While travelling through New Zealand, Konrad discovered Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc and was immediately attracted to the distinctive character of wine. The Konrads established their first Marlborough plantings in 1996 and launched a range of wines from their forty hectares of vineyard in the Wairau and Waihopai Valleys.

Every year, after completion of harvest and fermentations, wines from the two unique climes are assembled into the most splendid vintages of Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir, a generous palette of fruit which aaffords an opportunity to maintain the same high quality and consistent quality of wines year after year. The grapes for the Gewurztraminer and the award winning Riesling are grown exclusively in the Waihopai Valley next to the estate office and family home. Quality is the absolute focus of Konrad and it starts in the vineyard where no corners are cut, it continues at the wineworks where an uncompromising standard of vinification is the key.

Fruit is sourced from organically farmed & BioGro certified grapes in the family owned Waihopai Valley Vineyard,fully certified BioGro status, grown without the use of synthetic, fungicides, insecticides or herbicides. The vines are cultivated under practices which force the roots to delve down into the soil to extract moisture and nutrients from the sub-soil, resulting in more complex flavours.

Being a family business, control over quality is completely hands on. Konrad Hengstler's philosophy is that the best fertilizer are the footprints of the farmer. Through every day personal involvement and a commitment to the fundamentals of natural winemaking, a tradition of the most exquisite vintages in Marlborough wine are achieved, each and every year.
