Pinot Noir Mornington Victoria
After decades of managing vineyards and making wine, Crittenden have formed strong and enduring relationships with Victoria's best growers. Geppetto is a blend of Pinot Noir clones MV6 and 114, 115 and D2V5, all picked by hand from good vineyards in Sunbury and Geelong, Tuerong and Patterson Lakes. Geppetto is judiciously aged in barrels of seasoned oak, the style is intentionally made for early enjoyment, increased vine age and gentle processing makes a wine that articulates the vitality of Victorian Pinot Noir.
Grapes are hand harvested and immediately destemmed to small open fermenters without crushing. The musts, juices and pulp, skins and seeds, are transferred via a heat exchanger, lowering the ambient temperature. A protective CO2 cover is maintaied and the musts are cold soaked for several days prior to vinification. Half the batches are a spontaneous wild indigenous ferment, the balance is inoculated with choice red wine yeasts. Ferments peak at 32°C whereupon components are pressed off skins at dryness to a mixture of one, two and three year old 225 litre French oak barriques for completion of malolactic in late winter and several months maturation before bottling.
Bright scarlet colour. Nose of light cherry florals, red fruits, currant and supple oak. Palate of fresh fruit supported by supple tannins, retaining lively acidity. Essentially made in the same way as the estate Pinot Noir, the clonal composition is smaller, delivering a more integrated wine without any new oak complexity. Best enjoyed with your favourite lamb or duck recipes.
