The sensational vintages of St John's Road were generations in the making, the fruit of grand old vineyards and the progeny of families which have tilled Barossa soil since early settlement. The landed gentry along St John's Road represent a heritage of the most distinguished names in Australian viticulture, Lehmann and Lienert, Zander, Kalleske and Schutz. With each vintage, they earmark small parcels of the most exceptional Barossa fruit, to be treated to a course of traditional open ferments and term of age in the finest French oak. Bearing such pious Lutheran monikers as Prayer Garden and Resurrection Vineyard, these sacred sites are planted to some of the oldest clones in the world. The Domaine Chandon and Green Point operations are located amongst some of the most superlative Chardonnay vineyards in Yarra Valley. Vines were established to soils made rich after many decades of mixed farming. Fruit is sourced primarily from the cooler, elevated sites of Upper Yarra Valley. Vineyards in this region are renowned for producing Chardonnay with citrus flavours and high natural acidity at moderate sugar levels. Parcels of fruit from the lower reaches of the Valley floor contribute lovely soft stone fruit characters. Grapes are hand picked and vinified in French oak barrels, wild yeast ferments, lees stirring and ten months maturation build layers of texture and complexity.
Pale straw, green hues. The aroma expresses pristine varietal characters of white nectarine, ripe citrus and stone fruit as well as a subtle flavour profile of sweet, exotic spice. The palate is complex, structured and layered showing excellent balance between the expression of vibrant fruit and the secondary characters of roasted spice, soft cheese and toasty characters derived from fermentation, aging and lees stirring in French oak.
