There are but two winemakers who can lay claim to a staggering four Jimmy Watson Trophy victories. Wolf Blass was the man behind the label. John Glaetzer was the man behind Wolf Blass. While working for Wolf, Glaetzer was moonlighting on his own brand, applying the same extravagance of technique to the pick of Langhorne Creek fruit. Perfection in the form of black bramble fruit, muscular yet affable tannins, all framed by the luxury of ebony oak. Aspirants of the great Black Blass Label fables of 1974, 1975 and 1976, are privately advised to avail themselves of John's Blend, Cabernet or Shiraz. Crafted from the same parcels, in the same way, by the same hands, that collaborated to create, the most celebrated triumphs in the history of our nation's highest accolade, thrice winners of the exalted Jimmy Watson Memorial.. The Domaine Chandon and Green Point operations are located amongst some of the most superlative Chardonnay vineyards in Yarra Valley. Vines were established to soils made rich after many decades of mixed farming. Fruit is sourced primarily from the cooler, elevated sites of Upper Yarra Valley. Vineyards in this region are renowned for producing Chardonnay with citrus flavours and high natural acidity at moderate sugar levels. Parcels of fruit from the lower reaches of the Valley floor contribute lovely soft stone fruit characters. Grapes are hand picked and vinified in French oak barrels, wild yeast ferments, lees stirring and ten months maturation build layers of texture and complexity.
Pale straw, green hues. The aroma expresses pristine varietal characters of white nectarine, ripe citrus and stone fruit as well as a subtle flavour profile of sweet, exotic spice. The palate is complex, structured and layered showing excellent balance between the expression of vibrant fruit and the secondary characters of roasted spice, soft cheese and toasty characters derived from fermentation, aging and lees stirring in French oak.
