Shiraz Barossa South Australia
Distinction is the jewel in the Tscharke crown, only ever made in the most exceptional vintage years, crafted from priceless parcels of Shiraz, hand picked off the elite Gnadenfrei property in the ancient Barossa hamlet of Marananga. The mesoclime here is fortuitous for Shiraz, an auspicious terroir of conglomerate pink quartzite and shallow red brown clays, the ideal environment for low yields of the most intensely flavoured fruit.
Bunches of old vine Shiraz are all picked by hand and destemmed into open fermenters. The macerating musts are inoculated and vinified at warmer temperatures between 22ºC and 25ºC, ferments are pumped over twice daily and treated to a course of traditional foot stomping pigeage. Upon completion to dryness, batches are rested for a week on skins for optimal extraction of colour, flavour and tannin, followed by passage through an air bag press and racking to a selection of seasoned and new French oak barrels for extended maturation. Components are assembled and bottled nineteen months after harvest. Alcohol 15.2%
Vibrant purple red hue, deeply coloured core. Bouquet is brimming with blackberry notes, violets and cinnamon, cocoa and spice. Full bodied palate displaying plenty of red fruit flavours, red licorice and plums, white pepper spice and chocolate characters, an old vine Shiraz of amazing structure, well integrated over a bed of finely groomed tannins.
