The sensational vintages of St John's Road were generations in the making, the fruit of grand old vineyards and the progeny of families which have tilled Barossa soil since early settlement. The landed gentry along St John's Road represent a heritage of the most distinguished names in Australian viticulture, Lehmann and Lienert, Zander, Kalleske and Schutz. With each vintage, they earmark small parcels of the most exceptional Barossa fruit, to be treated to a course of traditional open ferments and term of age in the finest French oak. Bearing such pious Lutheran monikers as Prayer Garden and Resurrection Vineyard, these sacred sites are planted to some of the oldest clones in the world. Sauvignon Blanc vines are planted on light, well drained soils and cropped at three tonne to the acre. Vines are hedged trellised, exposing grapes to the sun achieving maximum ripeness. All blocks are irrigated from the nearby Loddon River through the use of ground level mini sprays. Fruit is harvested to a timetable determined by full physiological ripeness. Parcels are delivered to the winery in pristine condition, crushed and inoculated to select yeasts followed by a temperature controlled vinification in tank. Fermented at 12C to 15C over the course of several days, batches are cold stablilized and earth filtered followed by the final assemblage and sterile filtration to bottle.
A bright green straw colour. Water Wheel exhibits grass, lime and lemon citrus overtones on the nose, vegetable characters, asparagus, green bean and kiwi are in the background. The palate shows strong citrus flavours with some mineral characters in the middle, good fruit and acid balance. The wine has a clean, crisp and persistent finish, the ideal aperitif, well suited to seafood, risotto and lighter summer dining.
