An ongoing resurrection of some fabulous old vines, a distinguished Blewitt Springs site and a range of the most spectacular McLaren Vale wines. When Kelly and Bondar acquired Rayner Vineyard in 2013, they knew that everything depended on the management of site and soil to achieve the excellence of wine they had in mind. The most fastidious husbanding regimens and a tightly scheduled evolution towards organic viticulture, the propitious Rayner vines have never yielded finer harvests, all translating into a tour de force across the entire Bondar range. Salient quality and penurious pricing make for a compelling mix. Old vines grown to salubrious soils, the harvest timed to perfection, a precision picking of fruit at just the right hour of day, aimed at capturing and bottling the exquisite expression of place. Bondar's graceful Grenache releases are brimming with bright tri-colour fruits, delicately laced by genteel acidity. Whitehaven pride themselves on the quality of fruit. Vines are trained to three or four canes on a vertical trellis. Balanced pruning, shoot thinning, tucking and trimming are used to achieve an open, healthy canopy and clean fruit as the cool nights serve to retain acid freshness and delicate flavours. Grapes are harvested throughout the cool of night and pressed immediately with minimal contact on skins. After settling, the clear juices are vinified in fermenters at very low temperatures through the action of select yeast strains to preserve the distinctive regionally Marlborough varietal characters.
Crystal clear straw hue. Vibrant white currant, nettles and gooseberry aromas around a core of persistent grapefruit. Some pungent herbaceous and jalapenõ characters fill the background. The palate is full and vibrant, fresh nettle, gooseberry and tropical fruit flavours abound, lingering on the long, clean acid finish. A match with grilled snapper or asparagus recipes.

Whitehaven
Whitehaven were established in 1994 when Greg and Sue White enticed distinguished winemaker Simon Waghorn to come on board and give their fledgling winery an edge

For Greg and Sue, the move to Marlborough was a classic lifestyle change after careers spent in finance and marketing. For Simon, the motivation was the pursuit of quality winemaking without compromise. When it comes to crafting great wine, Whitehaven combine the precision of a scientific approach with the creative flair of an artisanal team, the crossover between science and art. Using new world techniques and old world craftsmanship, the team are focused on a portfolio of wines that deliver an enviable mix of quality, intensity and consistency.

Whitehaven

Acutely aware that great wines depend on premium grapes, Whitehaven sources its fruit from over 30 carefully selected and proven vineyard sites spread throughout the various valleys of this special region. Whitehaven prides itself on its use of Marlborough grapes only and this policy guarantees that its wines deliver authentic Marlborough flavours. It’s a claim few wineries can match today and reinforces Whitehaven’s reputation for consistency and integrity. Marlborough is the heartland of New Zealand winemaking and is now widely recognised as one of the world’s iconic grape growing regions.

With long sunshine hours, but a relatively cool climate, the grapes have the advantage of a long, slow ripening period which intensifies the flavours and gives the wine its unique character. Located in Marlborough’s golden mile of wine production, Whitehaven’s modern winery produces the full range of Marlborough wines including Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris, Riesling, Pinot Noir and Rose.

Whitehaven are a closely knit team who have supported the company from the early days, it keeps the company real. Each vintage a special batch of the very best wine is carefully selected to carry the Greg name, dedicated to the memory of Greg White.

Whitehaven

While Whitehaven has grown well beyond the expectations of its founders, the management, winemakers and viticulture team remain small and focused, working in an environment where their talents can be combined to produce elegant wines of superior quality and intensity, truly indicative of the Marlborough style. Whitehaven prides itself on a genuinely singular vision, consistently creating stunning wines of character and beauty from only the finest fruit.
