Airline pilots make surprisingly good wine. Their appreciation of the sciences, a respect for the weather and a bird's eye view of the land, all invaluable to the winemaker's art. John Ellis would take every opportune weekend away from his regular New York Paris route, to pursue a passion for viticulture. He planted the first commercial Cabernet Merlot vines in the Hamptons and found time between trans atlantic flights to work vintages amongst the Grand Cru vineyards of La Bourgogne. Ellis ultimately made the great lifelong sea change in favour of our land downunder. He settled on a farmstead outside Leongatha, amongst the slow ripening pastures of Gippsland and established a vineyard called Bellvale. It is now a place of fully mature vines and old world Burgundian techniques, sur lie et sauvage, barrel ferments and batonnage. Bellvale remains artisanally small batch, just 23 hectares of vine yields a measured harvest of spectacular quality Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, la saveur de la France from the top pick of Gippsland.. Marchesi Mazzei Zisola Nero dAvola CONFIRM VINTAGE

Avola Sicily Sicily
Inspired by the splendour of the Sicilian countryside and warmth of its people, the Mazzei family discovered Contrada Zisola near Siracusa, an area of rare beauty. Zisola is the fruit of a fortunate liaison between an eminent Tuscan family and a land blessed by nature with excellent conditions for winemaking. The vineyard is located at the home of the Nero d'Avola wine grape, a kilometre outside the magnificent town of Noto, celebrated for its baroque architecture. The land around Contrada Zisola is covered by grapevines, almonds and groves.
One of the most beautiful and spectacular vistas, the lands around Contrada Zisola are protected by Unesco as a world heritage site. At this charming spot, which enjoys a long history and rich culture, the Mazzeis found undeveloped potential and pioneered an ambitious project with considerable added value. At 130 metres above sea level, the vineyard is bush trained and planted to an average density of 5,500 vines per hectare. The most favourable climes lead to exceptional ripening of the grapes and an accumulation of colour and flavour of the highest quality. Following vinification, Zisola is transferred to a selection of new and seasoned French oak barriques for malolactic and ten months maturation.
Deep purplish, crimson red in colour. A bouquet dominated by black forest fruits and spice. Fleshy and juicy on the palate, good acid balance, red berries and sunny orange peel notes over fine tannins, elegantly concentrated, expressing great depth of flavour. A match to spicy fish soups, savoury pasta or rice dishes, grilled meats and country style vegetables.
